Marc Birkigt 1878-1953
Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt started his career by building cars in Spain. In 1911, he founded the company Hispano-Suiza in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret. Three years later, he started the design of an aircraft engine. Tests of a water-cooled V-8 kicked off in February 1915. His 8A, developing 150 hp, would break speed records around the world, and most notably powered Guynemers Spad S VII fighter. In 1968, Hispano-Suiza became part of the Snecma group.
